This is the first post in a series of articles which will discuss the rights of fathers in Florida, including the Melbourne area. I have previously written on how Florida views the rights of fathers. I feel it is important to follow up on that discussion as this is a topic which often sparks misunderstanding and tension between parents. I am writing my upcoming articles with the goal of providing information which can be used to clear up misconceptions. There are several reasons why I am addressing these particular topics. First, many dads are often unsure as to whether they have rights at all. Our state, like others in the Union, grants rights to a dad as long as paternity has been established. Second, it is important for one to understand what their rights are once they understand that some level of rights exist. Third, parents must understand that situations in which the parents were never married can raise different issues from matters where the parents have wed. Finally, if a father is not receiving visitation then he can obtain an Order from the Court which will give him a set schedule.
An important point I will be raising in each of these articles is that one should contact an attorney as soon as possible if they are involved in a family law dispute. The longer one waits to contact counsel then the more likely the Court is to view the current situation as the norm.
