couple sitting with divorce documentsThis article is being written to conclude and recap my series on how long it may take an individual to get divorced in Melbourne and other Florida areas. I considered it important to write on this topic due to the fact that the amount of time which the process may take is one of the most common questions asked of my office. I wrote this series with the goal of providing information which will assist people with better understanding both their situation and their options. It was also my goal to provide information which one may find helpful when they are selecting a family law attorney. If you or a family member are in need of assistance then contact my office today to speak with a lawyer.

I addressed several topics over my recent articles. Issues which I analyzed include:

There are several reasons why I chose to address these topics. First, while the uncontested process is certainly more swift, it is important to remember that the Court will not rule on the matter until at least twenty days have passed since it was filed. Uncontested divorces, therefore, often take between three and six weeks. Second, the amount of time which a contested divorce will take is going to depend on the number of issues which the parties disagree over as well the nature of the disagreement. Third, understanding whether or not an issue is worth litigating is important to ensuring that you are not unnecessarily delaying the case. Finally, one may not file for divorce in our state unless one of the spouses has been a Florida resident for at least six months.

One point I stressed in each of these articles is the importance of retaining an experienced attorney to assist you if you are going through a divorce. Counsel will give you an honest assessment as to whether an issue is worth disputing or whether it is in your best interests to settle. Having such advice can save you both time and money.
