This is the first post in a series of articles which will address the topic of filing for a divorce in Melbourne and other Florida areas if you are not currently a resident of the state. I feel it is important to write on this topic as it is common for spouses to have not resided together for some time before one wishes to file for divorce. Such spouses may find themselves unsure of where to file a case. The goal of my coming articles is to provide information which will help people to better understand their situation. I will be addressing several topics over my coming articles. Issues which I will analyze include:

I have chosen to address these particular topics for multiple reasons. First, a non-resident may file for divorce in our state if their spouse is a Florida resident who meets the statutory requirements. There are situations in which this may be preferable to the filing spouse. Second, if one wishes to file in our state then there is no way around the requirement of having been a resident for at least six months. I will discuss what it takes to be considered a Florida resident. Third, handling a divorce can be complicated if one of the spouses does not reside in our state. I will discuss what to expect when either you or your spouse do not live in Florida.
An important point that I will be stressing in each of these articles is the need to contact an attorney if you are divorcing across state lines.
